TEETH WHITENING
The condition of our teeth plays a significant role in how we feel about our appearance, affecting our self-esteem and confidence. These are perhaps the main reasons why more and more people seek us out to whiten their teeth.
There are various ways to achieve the desired whitening. However, some processes are harmful to dental health (a good example is whitening toothpaste that achieves the goal through enamel abrasion), and others are uncomfortable or of dubious safety.
At the Porto Dental Medicine Center, we use two harmless processes to achieve the desired whiteness for your teeth. The fastest and most convenient is laser or LED light whitening, where the patient visits the office for a consultation of about an hour. A compound based on hydrogen peroxide (known as hydrogen peroxide) is applied, which, when activated, releases oxygen molecules with the ability to whiten teeth without wearing down the enamel or affecting the dental pulp. Some other compounds (such as fluoride and potassium nitrate) are also released, which help strengthen the enamel, reduce sensitivity, protect against the onset of cavities, and prevent dental dehydration.
The second process uses exactly the same product but with a much lower percentage of the active ingredient. Therefore, the patient performs the whitening at home for 5 to 15 days, 2 to 3 hours per day, using two custom-made intraoral trays. This minimizes not only the amount of product needed but also its leakage into the oral cavity.
